The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Among Music Fans

It has been 20 years after the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, providing players everywhere the means to feel like rock legends. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that someone who has nailed Free Bird’s lengthy guitar solo before a packed crowd of friends.

Created by the developers, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to follow coloured notes scrolling down the screen synchronized to the music. Each riff mimicked specific notes, producing the feel of a genuine live show.

Harmonix previously experimented with rhythm games before partnering with RedOctane, which was purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they laid the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar series that had a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists included, showcasing classic groups to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the initial financial challenges of licensing the recordings – even though initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the necessary permissions alone, it proved nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – RedOctane had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. But once Guitar Hero became a hit, and record sales airtime were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many mothers and fathers got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the songs they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds a New Audience

Northern Irish group one featured act included Never Too Late in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician Paul Mahon recalls the way the game brought older hits to the forefront: “The game offered a larger, new demographic. Generally this had been seen as outdated material, but then once it got featured on the title and teenagers were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised the genre, and got rid of the ‘dad rock’ label. It gave our catalog a new life.”

At that time, the Answer’s debut album was still unreleased stateside, meaning Guitar Hero served as a primary platform for exposure for the band as they went on a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “Their crew had on Never Too Late during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles Enduring Impact

Rock’s biggest acts quickly took advantage of the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in specialized game editions centered around their music collections and associated stories, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said earned the band greater revenue than any of their records. It sold well over half a million units in its first week, while sales of Aerosmith’s music saw an increase significantly at a time as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed dedication within the community. Earlier this year, an online personality completed an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s the challenging track – a notoriously difficult anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with almost identical gameplay but an array of customisation options. This track is difficult enough on expert mode, not to mention performed at increased tempo and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you should use a real gun and go to war,” notes DragonForce guitarist the artist.

DragonForce had already completed a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, yet he explains it made them a household name. “I recall the record label informing us that we were records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else the band has done. Last year, the song featured in promotional material for a major film. “In the past I felt differently, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – everyone’s got their own path in music and I’m glad we played a role of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or games, goes further mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators believed humans have a natural human desire to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to do it”.

The majority installments were released over a mere five-year period between 2005 and 2010, including spin-offs such as DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community alive, with set to be something from the founders on the way. A new studio has entered production on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are participating in advisory roles. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed such titles might become like Madden allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant fresh tracks it could remain evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible for it to persist for future fans.”
