Early Saturday, reports emerged of major explosions rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Context: Rising Strains and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key events preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
