Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
